Weight Loss Dietetic Services

Anyone who would like to change their weight is welcome to contact Healthcare on Collins to make an appointment with a Dietician (with or without a referral).

This includes anyone who has been advised to lose weight by a medical professional for health reasons.

People may be referred to Healthcare on Collins by bariatric surgeons, where Dieticians are involved in both pre-surgery and post-surgery situations. The most common related surgeries are sleeve gastrectomies and RNY gastric bypasses.

Comprehensive Weight Loss Assessments

During the consultation, thorough assessments are conducted to ensure a holistic understanding of your needs. This involves assessing:
  • Medical history
  • Current eating behaviours
  • Motivations for weight loss
From here, there is a discussion about what are realistic goals to set – and how to achieve them. This can include a meal plan, education and strategies to adjust a person’s relationship with food. The aim is to provide tailored guidance and support to empower you on your journey towards sustainable weight management and improved overall health.

Measuring Progress

The weight scale is not the primary outcome for weight-loss-related services. Instead, there is a reference to the goals outlined in the initial appointment, such as;

  • “I would like to be able to walk the stairs more easily”
  • “I would like to be able to pick up my young family members from the ground”
  • “I would like to learn to sit cross-legged”

Dieticians work with people to set clear and meaningful goals, so together, a robust and realistic plan on how to best achieve these goals can be developed.

Self-set goals typically enhance motivation by providing individuals with a sense of ownership and purpose, fostering a deeper commitment towards achieving their long-term vision and well-being.

Bariatric Support Services

With bariatric surgery, extensive nutrition counselling is provided, particularly if the patient has developed disordered relationships with food from years of dieting.

The focus is on guiding people towards adopting a balanced and sustainable diet, rather than restrictive approaches.

  • Before surgery, patients typically follow a specific diet called a VLCD (Very Low Calorie) diet to enhance safety and prepare the body for the procedure by shrinking the liver.
  • Post-surgery, there’s a structured diet progression, starting with liquids for six to eight weeks, followed by pureed and soft food consistencies.

Long-term, patients typically have follow-up appointments every 6 to 12 months, along with regular blood tests, to ensure they maintain a generally well-balanced diet for sustained health.

People may be referred directly to Healthcare on Collins by their bariatric surgeon, however in other cases, the surgeon may ask the patient to find and choose their own Dietician to engage with.

FAQ

What is an example of working on altering someone’s eating habits?
Keeping a food and mood or energy diary can help individuals understand how certain foods affect their feelings and energy levels, as well as identify what drives their cravings or eating behaviours. For example, someone might notice a pattern of undereating during the day and then overeating when they get home from work and are feeling starving. Learning to fuel the body adequately throughout the day can help minimise these cravings and prevent overeating later on.
