Insertion & Removal of Contraceptive Devices

If you’re looking for a highly effective method of contraception, you may want to consider a contraceptive implant device. These devices are inserted just under the skin on the inside of your upper arm and can provide contraceptive protection for up to 3 years. At Healthcare on Collins, many General Practitioners are trained to insert and remove these devices. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic in our procedure room, often with the assistance of one of our Nurses.
When it’s time to remove the implant, your Doctor will do so after 3 years or at your request should you no longer require this method of contraception or if you are considering falling pregnant. Your fertility will return soon after removal of the device. To get started with a contraceptive implant, you’ll need to have an initial consultation with your Doctor. During this consultation, you’ll discuss your contraception options, including the implant, and obtain a prescription if needed. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss any related issues such as your normal periods, previous problems with infections, sexual health, or sexuality. Once you have your prescription or implant, you’ll need to bring it with you to your insertion appointment. If you haven’t obtained an implant from your Pharmacy, don’t worry, we have devices available. Your Doctor will advise the most suitable time to insert the implant, depending on your current menstrual cycle and any other contraception you’re using. If inserted at the right time of your cycle, no other method of contraception is necessary. Unless you’re switching from another hormonal contraception method, insertion should be on day 1-5 of your cycle (day 1 being the first day you bleed). If you’re interested in using a contraceptive implant or need to arrange insertion or removal, give us a call at (03) 9650 4284. We’ll make sure you’re booked with a Doctor who is accredited to perform this procedure for you.
