How exercise can strengthen bones and reduce fracture risk

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterised by low bone mineral density and an increased risk of fractures with Australia’s ageing population. This condition is a growing public health concern. Currently, around 67% of Australians over the age of 50 have poor bone health, contributing to significant healthcare costs, reduced mobility, loss of independence, and increased mortality. Risk factors include ageing, post-menopausal or hormonal changes, family history, low vitamin D or calcium intake, low body weight, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, prolonged bed rest, and long-term use of medications such as corticosteroids.

The good news is that bones are highly adaptable when exposed to appropriate mechanical loading through targeted exercise, bone tissue remodels over time, becoming stronger and more resilient. However, meaningful improvements in bone density require structured, progressive training over months rather than weeks.

The Bone STRONG Program is specifically designed to build bones safely and effectively through individualised assessment, progressive resistance training, balance, posture, and stability exercises, and functional movement coaching that supports real life activities. With options for one-on-one sessions, supervised group classes, and/or a tailored home exercise program. Regular re-assessments are scheduled to ensure the prog `ram continues to progress appropriately while maintaining safety. The program aims to increase bone mineral density, improve strength and posture, reduce falls risk, enhance confidence, and support long-term independence and quality of life – all delivered in a safe, evidence-based environment.

Ultimately, the Bone STRONG Program empowers individuals to move with confidence, protect their bone health, and stay active for longer.
