Dr Harry Unglik
I commenced at Midtown Medical Clinic in 1988. I joined my partner, Phillip Perlstein and together we were the cofounders of the Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre.
After a long career as director of both the Midtown Medical Clinic and the Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre, I retired in November 2022 after 50 years of medical practice. I remain actively involved in the management of both businesses post retirement.
I graduated in 1973 from Monash University with a Bachelor of medicine and a Bachelor of surgery. In 1980 I was admitted as a fellow of the College of General Practitioners. I was an examiner for the Victorian panel of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners for several years. In 1983, I completed the sports medicine training program with the Australian Sports Medicine Federation.
I was the Medical Officer for the Kangaroos Football Club in the AFL from 1983 to 2001 and this has enabled me to practice sports medicine with elite athletes at the highest level. In 1996 I was admitted as a fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation. I am a life member of the North Melbourne Football Club.
I was selected as an Olympic Doctor for the Sydney Olympics and the Doctor for the All Australian AFL Team Touring Ireland in 2000 and 2001.
In 2001, I was awarded a fellowship of Sports Doctors Australia. From 2001 to 2017, I served as the Medical Director of the AFL. I was the co-founder of the AFL’s Illicit Drug Policy.
In 2014 I was awarded life membership of the AFL.
I retired from my Director role at Healthcare on Collins in July 2025.

From a personal point of view I have always wanted to be a doctor from my earliest memories. I see it is an opportunity to serve the community and help ones fellow man.
I have never regretted my decision, and I look back fondly on my medical career having made so many friends, both professionally, with my patients and staff.
Outside interests
I have always believed in having hobbies that I could seamlessly transition into following my retirement.
I’m a musician, I play guitar and banjo. I paint and sculpt, and in the last few years I actually make Guitars. I have just completed my 12th guitar.
I also have a very close relationship with my children and my six grandchildren, and I’m heavily invested as a grandfather and a father.
