What is a NordBord?

The NordBord is equipment that is used to assess hamstring strength.

At Healthcare on Collins, your physiotherapist will use a NordBord to accurately measure the amount of force produced by your hamstring when performing the nordic hamstring curl.

The NordBord can determine whether there is a disparity in the strength between both of your limbs and whether the total amount of force produced by your hamstrings is adequate for your age and/or sports performance goals.

What Situations Would the NordBord be Used For?

Patients who are recovering from hamstring or lower back injuries may benefit from the use of a NordBord during their assessment.

Your physiotherapist might also recommend using a NordBord if they suspect hamstring strength is a contributing factor to an injury sustained during running or high-intensity sports, especially sports that involve regular bending (such as tennis).

How Does This Provide an Advantage to Physio Patients?

Showing patients clear quantitative data gives them goals to work towards and visualise their progress.

Getting real-time feedback on strength and range of motion is a great motivator to inspire people to keep up with their treatment plans and help them return to the sports and activities they love as soon as possible.

How Does the NordBord Work?

To start, the physiotherapist will guide you to secure your legs into the designated cuffs, positioning you comfortably for accurate testing.

Once in place, you’ll be instructed to perform nordic hamstring curls, while the NordBord precisely measures the force transmitted through each cuff.

This data allows your physiotherapist to assess your hamstring strength quickly and effectively, enabling tailored interventions to optimise your performance and reduce injury risk.

What Data Does the NordBord Produce?

The NordBord generates insightful data that goes beyond simple strength measurements.

It compares the strength of each hamstring, uncovering any potential imbalances that may predispose you to injury or affect your athletic performance.

Additionally, your physiotherapist may utilise the data to analyse muscle fatigue patterns, identifying any signs of early fatigue that could impact your training or rehabilitation progress

What If One Hamstring is Stronger than the Other?

Identifying discrepancies in hamstring strength is crucial for your safe return to sports or activities. With tools like the NordBord, your physiotherapist can accurately assess strength imbalances, guiding the development of a personalised rehabilitation plan.

Devices such as the NordBord allow your clinician to create the most suitable timeline for recovery as it provides more information than clinical observation.

For example, there can be a 25-30% difference between an injured versus non-injured hamstring which could risk further injury if not detected.

How is the Discrepancy in Hamstring Strength Rectified?

Sometimes a patient might just need more time to recover before returning to their sport or activity.

In other cases, your physiotherapist might give you some focused eccentric hamstring exercises to narrow the strength discrepancy between your limbs.

Booking Physiotherapy Appointments

It is preferable, although not essential, that you continue to see the same Physiotherapist regarding your injury or problem. Such continuity will enable your Physiotherapist to have a better understanding of your injury and they can then better monitor your progress.

A referral is not required to see a Physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy consultations may be covered under your Private Health Insurance. Please check with your private insurer to see if you are covered for part payment of your consultations. Please ensure you bring your membership card to your appointment if this applies to you.

Should you have a chronic health condition for which Physiotherapy would be of benefit, you may qualify for a rebate under a Medicare Team Care Arrangement. Please consult your General Practitioner if this applies to you.

To arrange an appointment to see one of our Physiotherapists please phone (03) 9650 4284 or book here.
